Tectonica series

Ornamentation as an Art of Contrasts

Tectonica is a collection of sculptural vessels that redefine the relationship between materiality and nature. This series embodies tectonic forces, transforming concrete into rhythmic compositions of geometric abstraction. Each piece serves as a spatial intervention, engaging with form, weight, and the interplay between solid presence and organic softness. These vessels are distinct gestures, sculptural statements that interact dynamically with their surroundings.

Bebedero

Suspended Gravity

An exercise in cantilevered balance, Bebedero plays with the idea of support and displacement. The upper vessel, appearing to hover over an offset plane, explores the tension between stability and levitation—an architectural illusion captured in sculptural form.

Frijoles

A vertical totem of spheres, a rhythmic play of repetition and variation. It bridges primitive forms and modern abstraction, exuding both whimsy and sculptural refinement.

Volcán

A sculptural vessel that captures the essence of geological force. Its conical structure, rooted in a stable base, rises with quiet strength—an echo of volcanic topographies shaped by time and pressure. The raw texture enhances its organic presence, allowing plants to emerge as if from the earth itself. A balance of monumentality and subtlety, Volcán integrates effortlessly into its surroundings while maintaining a commanding presence.

Garbanzos

Structured Expansion

A volume punctuated by repeating spherical elements, Garbanzos embraces the playfulness of modular repetition. Its surface rhythm adds depth and dimensionality, transforming a simple cylindrical vessel into a sculptural statement.

Libertad Series (2–5)

A study in modular exploration, the Libertad series symbolizes the journey from oppression to liberation. The first sculpture evokes a sense of confinement, with its compact and rigid form, while each subsequent piece gradually releases that tension, expanding and lightening in its structure. Through the balance of volume and repetition, Libertad reveals the progressive shift towards freedom, offering new perspectives on form and density as it evolves.

Spring

Ascending Rhythm

Spring evokes the visual rhythm of an expanding coil or the stratification of basalt columns. This vertical sequence is both mechanical and organic—an interplay of balance and movement, where each layer resonates in harmony with the next.

Antorcha

A Vertical Gesture of Light

Slender and assertive, Antorcha rises from its weighted base in a pure, tapering ascent. The form is reminiscent of an ancient torch, a beacon of presence and subtle monumentality. A sculptural punctuation in any space, it stands as a refined balance between density and air.

Átomos

The Floating Equilibrium

Resting on a triad of spheres, Átomos transforms a stable hemisphere into a composition of weightlessness. It reflects the fundamental structures of matter—balanced yet in perpetual dialogue with its surroundings. The softened geometry adds a quiet tension, where grounded form meets the illusion of suspension.

Chícharos

The Rhythm of Interruption

A cylindrical form punctuated by protruding spheres, Chícharos disrupts uniformity with calculated spontaneity. The juxtaposition of smooth surfaces and abrupt interruptions creates an engaging tactile experience, celebrating asymmetry within order.

Corvi

A Study in Inversion

With its sharply defined inverted cone resting on a cylindrical pedestal, Corvi is a sculptural inversion of stability. The striking contrast between its expanding upper section and solid foundation challenges the conventional balance of architectural elements.

Frijoles

A vertical column of spheres stacked in deliberate succession, Frijoles balances volume and void with a playful elegance. Each rounded form interacts with light, creating soft gradients and enhancing its sculptural fluidity. The result is both primitive and contemporary, evoking an ancestral totem while maintaining a modernist sensibility.

Tectonica Terra – Formas en Arcilla

Raw Earth, Timeless Form

The Tectonica Terra collection expands the language of Tectonica, shifting from the solid weight of concrete to the warmth and organic essence of clay. Here, materiality takes on a more fluid, tactile expression—an exploration of earthen forms shaped by time, pressure, and elemental transformation.

Each piece in this series embraces the intrinsic qualities of clay: its ability to breathe, to evolve, and to connect with the rituals of everyday life. Unlike the basaltic presence of its predecessor, Tectonica Terra carries an inherent softness, inviting a more intimate dialogue between form, nature, and human touch. This collection is an ode to the rawness of the earth—its textures, its imperfections, and its quiet resilience.

Ramificación

A rooted expansion of nature
Inspired by the organic growth of tree roots and branches, Ramificación transforms the act of planting into a sculptural gesture. Each protruding tube functions as an independent pocket for greenery, allowing plants to extend outward in multiple directions. The result is an evolving composition where structure and vegetation interact dynamically, mirroring the way nature finds its path.

Huerto Vertical

A modular tower of life
With its cylindrical form punctuated by open cavities, Vertical Huerto is an exploration in terracotta designed for an organic lifestyle. Each opening allows plants to grow freely, creating a vertical composition that brings greenery into everyday spaces. Simple, functional, and deeply connected to nature.

With Tectonica, Merla Laguna reimagines ornamental objects as sculptural interventions. These vessels do more than hold plants; they anchor space, merging the raw permanence of basaltic concrete with the ephemeral elegance of nature. Tectonica Terra extends this vision into clay, embracing the organic fluidity of earthbound materials. Together, these series create a dialogue between weight and lightness, structure and adaptability—offering a spectrum of forms that transform and evolve with their environment.
